RESUMO

Introduction: Salvia L., representing the largest genus within the mint family, is noted for its global distribution of approximately 1000 species, with East Asia, and particularly China, recognized as a critical center of diversity for the genus. Methods: Our research was conducted through extensive fieldwork in Guidong County, Hunan Province, China, where we identified a previously undescribed species of Salvia. The identification process involved detailed morphological observations, phylogenetic analyses, and plastid genomics. Results: The newly discovered species, Salvia guidongensis, exhibits unique characteristics not commonly observed in the East Asian lineage of Salvia, including dual floral colors within natural populations-either pale purple or pale yellow. Morphologically, while it shares similarities with members of sect. Glutinaria, S. guidongensis is distinct in its floral morphology, stature, and specific foliar traits. Phylogenetic analysis places S. guidongensis in a unique clade within the East Asian lineage of Salvia, suggesting it may serve as an important evolutionary link. Additionally, we explored the plastome features of S. guidongensis, comparing them with those of closely related species. Discussion: The discovery of S. guidongensis not only entriches the taxonomic tapestry of Salvia but also provides critical insights into the biogeography and evolutionary pathways of the genus in East Asia. By integrating morphological and molecular data, we validate the novel status of S. guidongensis and highlight its significance in bridging taxonomic and evolutionary gaps within Sect. Glutinaria of Salvia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Based on self-report questionnaires, two previous epidemiological studies investigated the association between the exposure of women to antibiotics and their fertility. However, biomonitoring studies on low-dose antibiotic exposure, mainly from food and water, and its relation to the risk of infertility are missing. METHODS: Based on a case-control study design, 302 women with infertility (144 primary infertility, 158 secondary infertility) and 302 women with normal fertility, all aged 20-49 years, were recruited from Anhui Province, China, in 2020 and 2021. A total of 41 common antibiotics and two antibiotic metabolites in urine samples were determined by liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QqQ-MS/MS). RESULTS: Twenty-eight antibiotics with detection rates from 10% to 100% in both cases (median concentration: ∼2.294 ng/mL) and controls (∼1.596 ng/mL) were included in the analysis. Logistic regression analysis revealed that after controlling for confounding factors, high concentrations of eight individual antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, sulfaclozine, sulfamonomethoxine, penicillin G, chlorotetracycline, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, and cyadox) and four antibiotic classes (sulfonamides, tetracyclines, quinoxalines, and veterinary antibiotics) were related to a high risk of female infertility, with odds ratios (ORs) ranging from 1.30 to 2.86, except for chlorotetracycline (OR = 6.34), while another nine individual antibiotics (sulfamethazine, azithromycin, cefaclor, amoxicillin, oxytetracycline, pefloxacin, sarafloxacin, enrofloxacin, and florfenicol) and classes of chloramphenicol analogs and human antibiotics were related to a reduced risk of infertility, with ORs ranging from 0.70 to 0.20. Based on restricted cubic spline models after controlling for confounding factors, we observed that the relationship between all of the above protective antibiotics and infertility was nonlinear: A certain concentration could reduce the risk of female infertility while exceeding a safe dose could increase the risk of infertility. CONCLUSION: These results provide preliminary evidence that the effects of antibiotics on female fertility vary based on the active ingredient and usage and imply the importance of exposure dose. Future studies are needed to verify these results by controlling for multiple confounding factors.

RESUMO

AIMS: Interleukin (IL)-5 mediates the development of eosinophils (EOS) that are essential for tissue post-injury repair. It remains unknown whether IL-5 plays a role in heart repair after myocardial infarction (MI). This study aims to test whether IL-5-induced EOS population promotes the healing and repair process post-MI and to reveal the underlying mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS: MI was induced by permanent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery in wild-type C57BL/6 mice. Western blot and real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed elevated expression of IL-5 in the heart at 5 days post-MI. Immunohistostaining indicated that IL-5 was secreted mainly from macrophages and CD127+ cells in the setting of experimental MI. External supply of recombinant mouse IL-5 (20 min, 1 day, and 2 days after MI surgery) reduced the infarct size and increased ejection fraction and angiogenesis in the border zone. A significant expansion of EOS was detected in both the peripheral blood and infarcted myocardium after IL-5 administration. Pharmacological depletion of EOS by TRFK5 pretreatment muted the beneficial effects of IL-5 in MI mice. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that IL-5 increased the accumulation of CD206+ macrophages in infarcted myocardium at 7 days post-MI. In vitro co-culture experiments showed that EOS shifted bone marrow-derived macrophage polarization towards the CD206+ phenotypes. This activity of EOS was abolished by IL-4 neutralizing antibody, but not IL-10 or IL-13 neutralization. Western blot analyses demonstrated that EOS promoted the macrophage downstream signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) phosphorylation. CONCLUSION: IL-5 facilitates the recovery of cardiac dysfunction post-MI by promoting EOS accumulation and subsequent CD206+ macrophage polarization via the IL-4/STAT6 axis.

RESUMO

Powder metallurgy (PM) is a versatile process to manufacture nearly net-shaped metallic materials in industry. In this study, the PM process was used to fabricate two Fe-based laminated metal composites (LMCs), Fe-4Ni-3Cr-0.5Mo-0.5C/Fe and 410/304L. The results showed that after sintering, the LMCs were free of interfacial cracks and distortion, indicating that the PM process is a feasible means for producing these LMCs. In the Fe-4Ni-3Cr-0.5Mo-0.5C/Fe LMC, the diffusion of C resulted in the generation of a continuous pearlite layer between the Fe-4Ni-3Cr-0.5Mo-0.5C and Fe layers and a ferrite/pearlite mixture in the Fe layer. In the 410/304L LMC, the difference in the chemical potentials of C between the 304L and 410 layers led to the uphill diffusion of C from the 410 layer to the 304L layer. A continuous ferrite layer was thus formed near the interface of the 410 layer. Furthermore, a martensite layer of about 50 µm thickness was generated at the interface due to the high Cr and Ni content.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the cause of abortion and strategy of prenatal diagnosis for pregnant women with high risk for chromosomal abnormalities by using copy number variation sequencing (CNV-seq) and short tandem repeats (STR) analysis. METHODS: A total of 36 samples were collected, including amniotic fluid, abortion tissue, whole blood, chorionic villi and umbilical cord blood. CNV-seq and STR analysis were carried out to detect microdeletions, microduplications, chromosomal aneuploidies, mosaicisms and triploidies. RESULTS: Among all samples, 1 was detected with 4p15.1p16.3 and 14q11.1q22.1 duplication, 1 was detected with 19p13.3 deletion, 8 were detected with chromosomal aneuploidies, 4 were detected with mosaicisms, two were detected with triploidies. No definite pathogenic CNVs were detected in 20 samples, which yielded a positive detection rate of 44.44%. CONCLUSION: As a high-throughput detection method, CNV-seq has the advantages of rapidity, simplicity and high accuracy. It may suit prenatal diagnosis and analysis of abortion factors in combination with STR analysis.

RESUMO

Isodon brevipedunculatus, a new species from southern China, is described and illustrated. The phylogenetic position of the new species within the genus was analyzed based on two nuclear ribosomal DNA regions and an ingroup sampling of about 80% of Asian species of Isodon. The results show that I. brevipedunculatus is recovered in a clade that consists of species mainly with glandular mericarps and that are distributed in the Sino-Japanese region. Combining molecular and geographical evidence, our study reveals that I. brevipedunculatus is most closely related to Isodon amethystoides and Isodon bifidocalyx, but differs from the former in lamina shape, number of flowers per cyme, and peduncle length, and from the latter in lamina indumentum, calyx morphology, and corolla length.

RESUMO

Rising emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have warmed the planet substantially and are also accompanied by poor air quality. The increased prevalence of allergic airway disease worldwide can be partially attributed to those global environmental changes. Climate change and air pollution pose adverse impacts on respiratory allergies, and that the mechanisms are complex and interactive. Adverse weather conditions, such as extreme temperatures, can act directly on the respiratory tract to induce allergic respiratory illnesses. Thunderstorms and floods can alter the production and distribution of aeroallergens while wildfires and dust storms increase air pollution, and therefore indirectly enhance health risks. Concentrations of particulate matter and ozone in the air have been projected to increase with climate warming and air stagnation, and the rising temperatures and CO2 increase pollen, molds, and spores, which escalate the risk of allergic respiratory diseases. The synergistic effects of extreme heat and aeroallergens intensify the toxic effect of air pollutants, which in turn augment the allergenicity of aeroallergens. With the Earth's climate change, migration of humans and plants shift the living environments and allergens of susceptible people. Urban residents are exposed to multiple factors while children are sensitive to environmental exposure. Since climate change may pose many unexpected and persistent effects on allergic respiratory diseases, health professionals should advocate for effective mitigation and adaptation strategies to minimize its respiratory health effects.

RESUMO

Aminopeptidase N (ANPEP) is a membrane-bound zinc-dependent peptidase. Although it is widely believed that ANPEP acts as an important angiogenesis regulatory factor, there are few studies about its function in the female reproductive system. In our previous research, we applied Isobaric Tags for Relative and Absolute Quantitation (iTRAQ) to analyze the influence of different controlled superovulation treatments for Assisted Reproductive Technology, In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer (IVF-ET)) patients from a global proteomic perspective to search for potential biomarkers associated with endometrium receptivity and embryo implantation. ANPEP is one of the proteins that demonstrated differential expression between different treatment groups and may be closely associated with endometrial receptivity. In this study, we assessed the expression of ANPEP in the endometrium of mice at different ages and found it to be highest in the mature period. We also detected ANPEP expression in the endometrium of IVF-ET patients in the proliferative, preimplantation and implantation stages, and the highest expression level of ANPEP was found in the last group. Human primary endometrial stromal cells were infected with an adenovirus expression vector containing the ANPEP gene and a green fluorescent protein (GFP) fusion protein; the mRNA levels of HOXA-10, LIF, and integrin ß3 were found to be increased. Therefore, we conclude that ANPEP could be involved in the regulation of endometrial receptivity.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Yishen Zhuangyang Cream (YZC) on the hemodynamic parameters of the penile cavernous artery in ED patients and explore its pharmacological mechanisms. METHODS: Ninety-two outpatients with ED were randomly assigned to receive YZC (n = 60) or placebo ( the control group, n = 32), all for 4 weeks. Comparisons were made between the two groups of patients in the IIEF-5 scores, penile erectile hardness (PEH) scores and the hemodynamic parameters of the penile cavernous artery before and after treatment. RESULTS: The IIEF-5 and PEH scores were both significantly increased in the YZC group after treatment in comparison with the baseline (19.18 ± 3.56 vs 12.63 ± 3.78, P < 0.01; 3.58 ± 0.50 vs 3.21 ± 0.62, P < 0.01), and higher than in the control group after medication (19.18 ± 3.56 vs 13.72 ± 2.85, P = 0.01; 3.58 ± 0.50 vs 3.28 ± 0.58, P < 0.01), but no statistically significances were observed between the two groups after treatment or within each group before and after medication in the peak systolic velocity (PSV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), or resistance index (RI) of the penile artery (P > 0.05). The rate of therapeutic effectiveness was remarkably higher in the YZC than in the control group (73.33% vs 21.88%, Z = -4.665, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: YZC can improve the erectile function of ED patients by increasing IIEF-5 and PEH scores but has no significant effect on penile hemodynamics. The pharmacological mechanisms of YZC acting on ED need to be further studied.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Controversial results have been reported concerning the effect of acupuncture on in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. The current review was conducted to systematically review published studies of the effects of acupuncture on IVF outcomes. METHODS: Women undergoing IVF in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were evaluated for the effects of acupuncture on IVF outcomes. The treatment groups involved traditional, electrical, laser, auricular, and other acupuncture techniques. The control groups consisted of no, sham, and placebo acupuncture. The PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched. The pregnancy outcomes data are expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) based on a fixed model or random model depending on the heterogeneity determined by the Q test and I2 statistic. The major outcomes were biochemical pregnancy rate (BPR), clinical pregnancy rate (CPR), live birth rate (LBR), and ongoing pregnancy rate (OPR). Heterogeneity of the therapeutic effect was evaluated by a forest plot analysis, and publication bias was assessed by a funnel plot analysis. RESULTS: Thirty trials (a total of 6344 participants) were included in this review. CPR data showed a significant difference between the acupuncture and control groups (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.06-1.50, p = 0.01), but there was significant statistical heterogeneity among the studies (p = 0.0002). When the studies were restricted to Asian or non-Asian area trials with a sensitivity analysis, the results significantly benefited the CPR in Asian group (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.04-2.20, p = 0.03). Based on the area subgroup analysis, we found that in the Asian group, the IVF outcomes from the EA groups were all significantly higher than those from the control groups (CPR: OR 1.81, 95% CI 1.20-2.72, p = 0.005; BPR: OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.12-3.02, p = 0.02; LBR: OR 2.36, 95% CI 1.44-3.88, p = 0.0007; OPR: OR 1.94, 95% CI 1.03-3.64, p = 0.04). Meanwhile, compared with other acupuncture time, the IVF outcome results were significantly superior in the acupuncture group when acupuncture was conducted during controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) (CPR: OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.27-2.29, p = 0.0004; LBR: OR 2.41, 95% CI 1.54-3.78, p = 0.0001; BPR: OR 1.50, 95% CI 1.02-2.20, p = 0.04; OPR: OR 1.88, 95% CI 1.06-3.34, p = 0.03). However, when acupuncture was conducted at the time of embryo transfer, the BPR and OPR from the acupuncture groups were significantly lower than those of the controls in the Asian group (BPR: OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.48-0.92, p = 0.01; OPR: OR 0.68, 95% CI 0.49-0.96, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Based on an analysis of the studies, acupuncture improves the CPR among women undergoing IVF. When the studies were restricted to Asian or non-Asian area patients, compared with traditional acupuncture and other methods, electrical acupuncture yielded better IVF outcomes. Optimal positive effects could be expected using acupuncture in IVF during COH, especially in Asian area. However, as a limitation of this review, most of the included studies did not mention the number of embryos transferred.

RESUMO

Infection rates of rodents have a significant influence on the transmission of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). In this study, four cities and two counties with high HFRS incidence in eastern Hunan Province in China were studied, and surveillance data of rodents, as well as HFRS cases and related environmental variables from 2007 to 2010, were collected. Results indicate that the distribution and infection rates of rodents are closely associated with environmental conditions. Hantavirus infections in rodents were positively correlated with temperature vegetation dryness index and negatively correlated with elevation. The predictive risk maps based on multivariate regression model revealed that the annual variation of infection risks is small, whereas monthly variation is large and corresponded well to the seasonal variation of human HFRS incidence. The identification of risk factors and risk prediction provides decision support for rodent surveillance and the prevention and control of HFRS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the suitable fresh embryo transfer strategy for mild ovarian stimulation with clomiphene citrate in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). METHODS: The data of the 286 patients for IVF-ET from 1st January, 2013 to 30th June, 2015 in Clinical Center of Reproductive Medicine, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were retrospectively analyzed to find the difference of clinical pregnancy rate in different endometrial thickness groups. RESULTS: It had been described that clomiphene citrate had adverse effects on endometrium. Our data showed that these effects were decreased along with the increase of endometrial thickness. When the endometrial thickness reached 9 mm before embryo transfer, the clinical pregnancy rate for fresh embryo transfer was close to the regular ovarian stimulation protocol. CONCLUSION: When the endometrial thickness reaches 9 mm before embryo transfer, fresh embryo transfer is suitable for patients undergoing mild ovarian stimulation with clomiphene citrate.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To study the relation between temperature and mortality by estimating the temperature-related mortality in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. METHODS: Data of daily mortality, weather and air pollution in the three cities were collected. A distributed lag nonlinear model was established and used in analyzing the effects of temperature on mortality. Current and future net temperature-related mortality was estimated. RESULTS: The association between temperature and mortality was J-shaped, with an increased death risk of both hot and cold temperature in these cities. The effects of cold temperature on health lasted longer than those of hot temperature. The projected temperature-related mortality increased with the decreased cold-related mortality. The mortality was higher in Guangzhou than in Beijing and Shanghai. CONCLUSION: The impact of temperature on health varies in the 3 cities of China, which may have implications for climate policy making in China.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of low-dose daily de-escalatory administration of tadalafil on psychological erectile dysfunction (ED). METHODS: We randomized 84 psychological ED patients into an observation and a control group of equal number to receive low-dose daily de-escalatory administration and on-demand medication of tadalafil, respectively, both for 2 months. We compared the scores on IIEF-5 and erection hardness (EHS) between the two groups before and after the treatment. RESULTS: The treatment and follow-up were accomplished for 79 cases, with 5 withdrawals in the control group. The IIEF-5 and EHS scores were remarkably improved in both the observation and control groups after treatment. The rate of therapeutic effectiveness was significantly higher in the observation group than in the control (95.2% vs 86.5%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Low-dose daily de-escalatory administration of tadalafil is highly effective and even better than on-demand medication of tadalafil for psychological ED.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The transmission of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is influenced by population dynamics of its main host, rodents. It is therefore important to better understand rodents' characteristic in epidemic areas. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We examined the potential impact of food available and climatic variability on HFRS rodent host and developed forecasting models. Monthly rodent density of HFRS host and climate data in Changsha from January 2004 to December 2011 were obtained. Monthly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and temperature vegetation dryness index (TVDI) for rice paddies were extracted from MODIS data. Cross-correlation analysis were carried out to explore correlation between climatic variables and food available with monthly rodent data. We used auto-regressive integrated moving average model with explanatory variables to examine the independent contribution of climatic variables and food supply to rodent density. The results indicated that relative rodent density of HFRS host was significantly correlated with monthly mean temperatures, monthly accumulative precipitation, TVDI and NDVI with lags of 1-6 months. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Food available plays a significant role in population fluctuations of HFRS host in Changsha. The model developed in this study has implications for HFRS control and prevention.
